Turning Leaf Community, a church of the Nazarene, started on May 6, 2007 as a church plant sponsored by the Orangewood Nazarene Church located on 27th avenue north of Glendale avenue in Phoenix. Pastor Jeff Fillis was on staff at the Orangewood Church as Worship Pastor for 10 years. As time went by Pastor Jeff began to sense that God was calling him to take a leap of faith and begin a church in the west valley of the Phoenix area. He began working with the leadership of the Orangewood Church to develop a core group of people who joined with him to start the church.
Turning Leaf Church is currently meeting at Barbary Robey School in the Litchfield Elementary school district. The ministry team at TLC believes strongly that the church is not there for the sole reason of bringing people to the church; but that the church has a responsibility to go out into the community. TLC has accomplished this through block parties, Halloween alternative events, open gym nights, volunteering for school and community events, carwashes to raise money for families in need as well as other projects for individuals in the community.
In our first service as a church we handed out rocks that have "Turning Leaf Community" and the date that we started holding services painted on them. The significance of the rocks comes from Joshua chapter 4 where the Israelites were instructed to take 12 stones out of the Jordan river, representing the 12 tribes of Israel, to use as a memorial; remembering the goodness of God and teaching future generations about the events of that day. As we continue to hand out rocks to our new members and regular attendees we ask each person to put the rock in a prominent place in their home or work space where people will notice the rock and ask about its significance. This allows us to tell and retell the story of the graciousness of God in helping TLC become the church God desires for us to be. When we build a permanent building we will ask for the rocks back and build a memorial out of them to remind generations that follow how God was with us in the start of this new church.
